VALUE OF THE MOMENTS "THE BEST TIMES ONLY REVEAL THEMSELVES AFTER THEY’VE PASSED. BE ALERT NOT TO MISS THEM." - Scott Ninneman - SPEAKINGBIPOLAR.COM

The rain fell in rhythmic drops all around the screen porch. The pitter-pat of water drops falling from leaf to leaf on the nearby walnut tree soothed us into a trance.

Lizzy and I sat in silence on opposite sides of the square, glass-topped patio table that filled most of the screen porch. Occasionally glancing at each other to share a knowing smile, but mostly lost in our own thoughts as the melody of the rain drove us to internal depths.

After many minutes, Lizzy broke the silence and said, “A good friend is someone with which you can spend hours laughing. A best friend is someone who finds comfort in sitting together in silence.”

I didn’t have to say anything in reply. We said more in our silence than any words I could speak.

We were two friends sitting peacefully in the middle of a summer rain. It was a regular day, and we did nothing but enjoy each other’s company. The value of those minutes was unknown at the time, but now it’s a cherished memory I pray never to forget.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.” — Dr. Seuss

Memories can be a wonderful reason to be positive. My best memories are full of people and places I love. Reflecting on those warm emotions is an excellent way to start your day.

If your day is off to a rough start, take five minutes to relive one of your best memories. Truly let yourself feel it, experiencing every sound, scent, and texture. Allow it to return you to the joy you felt in the memory and carry that feeling with you throughout your day.

It’s easy to overlook the value of a moment while you’re living it. Often, like my afternoon sitting listening to the rain, the best times only reveal themselves after they’ve passed. Be alert not to miss them.

Until next time, keep fighting.
