Excerpt: "Like a cartoon character leaving behind a trail of dust, I sped for the house. With each step, snow crunching beneath my feet, I heard another sound. The beast was growing closer with every step.
Finally, I reach the corner of the house, the place where the light from our back porch broke the darkness. I paused for a second, but it was too long. The beast was on me… and he wanted to play.
The monster turned out to be my neighbor’s black lab. Perfectly hidden in the darkness, only his eyes caught the light. As he jumped around me, I laughed in hysterics. My mind had made things so much worse than they were. I was in a terrifying situation, but I found the strength to do what was needed.
When was the last time you needed courage? Maybe it was when you went to the doctor and told him about all the chaos in your head. It could be the time you opened up to your partner about your social anxiety. Perhaps it was just taking this morning’s meds or going to work.
Living with mental illness takes a lot of courage. There are days when even the simplest things feel impossible. Simple activities like driving, social interaction, or going to work can make you tremble inside.
Yet, as a mental illness warrior, you fight on. You know no one else is going to pay your bills or provide what your family needs. So you push yourself to do the next thing, summoning the courage you need, no matter how hard it may be.
You also need courage to continue living. Bipolar disorder will drive you to want to give up. Fighting the dark desires takes strength. Choosing to live another day requires bravery.
Life can be overwhelming, and it can feel like there are dragons everywhere, but you must go on.
If today was too hard and all you did was stay alive while hiding under your blankets, that’s okay. You’re still here, and that’s what matters. Tomorrow is a new day, and you will try again when the sun comes up."
Until next time, keep fighting.
