You Are Powerful No Matter What Your Mind Says

You are powerful.

If you’re fighting a mental illness, you may be laughing right now. You might even think, “Scott, you crazy man. I can’t even get my butt out of bed, and you’re telling me I’m powerful? Seriously?”

Yes, seriously.

If you are alive and can communicate, you have the power of words. Words can build communities and conquer empires.

I can’t help but think of Helen Keller. Both blind and deaf, Keller was truly cut off from the world around her. It’s unfathomable to think about the pain and loneliness she felt before Anne Sullivan took the time to teach her how to communicate.

Keller was born in 1880, a time when having a disability made you an invisible part of society. Yet, she smashed the odds stacked against her.

In time, Keller became an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and lecturer. Her words still affect people today, myself included, over 50 years after her death.

You are just as powerful as Helen Keller, and you have so many more opportunities. Use your power.

Modern technology has made it possible for patients otherwise unable to communicate to still lead full lives. Stephen Hawking even starred on The Big Bang Theory long after he lost control of his body.

Hawking used his power to live as full a life as he could. And who wouldn’t have loved to be part of that amazing show? You likely have many more chances to use your strength than he did.

Think today of your power. How can you use your words to build up others? What experiences do you have that could encourage someone else fighting the same battles?

You are powerful. Never forget that.

Until next time, keep fighting.
