Belief is a powerful tool. In one of my favorite movies, Hook, Peter needs to believe before he can set things right. When he believed everything changed.
You don’t have the option of living in Neverland, but there is a lesson you can learn from Peter. Positive thinking affects your world and your health.
Johns Hopkins expert Lisa R. Yanek, M.P.H., and her team conducted a study that found people with family history and high-risk factors for coronary artery disease were 13 percent less likely to have a heart attack or other coronary event if they had a positive mindset.
I’ll take a 13-percent gain every day of the week.
Believing you will survive improves your chances of success, whether you’re lost in the wilderness or battling a mental illness.
It’s easy to forget the power of belief when you’re sick every day. The constant aches and pains, the chorus of negative voices in your head, and the crushing weight of depression can make it near impossible to believe things will ever get better.
How long was your worst day? It might have felt longer, but it was only 24 hours. And you survived it. Imagine what else you can do.
The worst days always end. Belief is the power to keep you afloat during the hardest days. Be like Peter and believe.
For today, imagine your life without the problems that are weighing you down. Think about a time when anxiety won’t keep you confined at home or when physical exhaustion won’t equate to being in bed for days. If you believe a better life is possible, you may achieve it.
No, belief won’t cure your illness, but it can make it more endurable. Hold on to the hope that better days will come and they will.
