Crying can be a positive thing. Our bodies were designed to cry, both to express emotion and to release toxins.
Many people don’t like to cry. Me personally, I’ll do everything I can to stop up my tear ducts, but I know it’s an important thing to do from time to time.
The best crying comes after a body-shaking laugh. You remember those happy tears for years to come. For example, one night, we were playing cards. We laughed a lot. A friend laughed so hard she peed her pants. The more she laughed, the more she peed, and hysterics took over until we couldn’t breathe.
Talk about a dramatic end to a game. It's a favorite memory.
Then there’s the tears that comes from loss. Losing your loved one brings the most painful tears. Your heart breaks as each drop of water meanders down your face.
The value of crying is in owning your emotions. You must accept how you feel before you can move on.
Mental illness teaches you to hide your emotions, even from yourself. But feelings serve a purpose. Bottling them up only leads to more pain.
If you need to laugh, laugh until no more air comes. If you need to cry, then cry until your eyes run dry. Let yourself feel every emotion so you can move forward again.
If you cry uncontrollably or for days on end, it’s time to talk to your mental health care provider. However, occasional tears are healthy.
For today, give yourself permission to cry. Find a sad movie and let it pull at your heartstrings until the tears fall or call your best friend who always makes you laugh.
Crying is a beautiful gift, and a vital part of managing your mental health.
Let your tears fall.
