"YOUR DREAMS DON’T HAVE TO END BECAUSE OF MENTAL ILLNESS. IT MAY TAKE MORE STEPS TO REACH YOUR GOAL, BUT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE." - SCOTT NINNEMAN - SPEAKINGBIPOLAR.COM

Growing up, I dreamed of being a writer. One day I would live in a cozy mountain cabin near a sprawling lake. I would spend days sit ting close to my steaming cup of coffee, a thick cardigan wrapped around me, and the words would seep effortlessly from my mind.

Around age nine, I started writing on bits of paper. Carefully folded and stapled, I perfected my handwriting and wrote tiny books. Yet I dreamed of more.

With an electric typewriter, I was the king of the world. My publishing empire was taking off. The sound of the typewriter’s low hum filled me with glee, and I typed as often as I could.

The Informer was my first newsletter, produced long before I would ever hear of the internet. My dream was coming true, and nothing could stop it.

Except, in time, I put it on hold. I got busy living life.

I grew and changed, but writing took a back seat. I thought there would always be time for writing.

At 23, I received my bipolar diagnosis. Confined in a treatment center, my mind drifted back to writing. I vowed to write again, but quickly forgot my promise.

Life in the world changed me. While my dream was to write fiction works, it became clear it was more important to share my struggles with mental illness. I published my first blog post early in 2018 and haven't stopped since.

My dream is coming true just not in the way I expected.

Your dreams don’t end with a mental illness diagnosis. It may take more steps to reach your goal, but anything is possible.

Give your dreams wings and let them take flight.

Think about your dreams. What goals did you set aside? Dust off those visions and take the first steps toward reaching your prize.

Until next time, keep fighting.
