How To Find Strength in Your Weaknesses
During my life, a few things have cracked me to my core. Three of the most painful ones were when I lost all control and was finally diagnosed with bipolar disorder while in a psychiatric hospital, when my business failed and I had to learn how to start over with nothing, and when I lost the love of my life.
Each blow felt unsurvivable. I felt like I would disintegrate into a thousand tiny pieces. It seemed each tragic event would define me from that day forward. As is often the case, I was wrong.
When trials come along our road to success, it may feel like the struggle cracks our inner being. A crack does not need to lead to a total collapse.
“One small crack does not mean you are broken. It means you were put to the test, and you didn’t fall apart.”—Linda Poindexter
Japanese culture has a wonderful art form called kintsugi that teaches us how valuable cracks can be. When a porcelain vase or cup is cracked, rather than discarding the damaged item, artists frequently fill the crack with gold.
The crack becomes a thing of beauty. They make the item unique because of the damage that was done to it. Weakness becomes the focal point of strength and elegance. Its value increases.
You are no different. Your cracks make you beautiful. Through pain and trauma, you earned each scar, but by continuing to fight, you’ve filled those wounds with gold.
Things along the way will knock you down, but they don’t have to destroy you. Fill your cracks with gold, get up, and start fighting again. Your strength will shine and resonate with everyone around you. Your beauty will inspire others.
Until next time, keep fighting.
