I love mechanical clocks. The more intricate and complicated, the better. From grandfather clocks to cuckoos, they all amaze me. Once upon a time, I even dreamed of designing cuckoo clocks.
We had a cuckoo in my childhood home, and it still hangs on the wall in my parent’s house. It was old when I was a kid, but now it’s got another 50 years under its belt.
It amazed me how a series of two weights could keep the clock running and the cuckoo singing.
Then, I learned of amazing clocks with dancing characters and music playing. The famous Glockenspiel in the New City Hall on Marienplatz in Munich is one such clock. Though never fully automatic, it’s amazing what the clockmaker accomplished. His masterpiece still runs over 100 years later.

It makes me sad that digital clocks have pushed many mechanical masterpieces into obscurity, but that’s a topic for another day. The lesson for today is to learn from what clocks do.
My parent’s cuckoo clock is an 8-day clock. If I pull the weights to the top, the clock will run for eight days without needing further attention. Day or night, for decades, it does its job.
Like that old clock, you have to do the same. Keep doing your job and move forward.
Hard days will come, and there will be times you have to stay in bed and hide from the world, but the rest of the time, you need to keep going.
Look at a clock and remember this lesson every time you feel like quitting.
Until next time, keep fighting.
