THROUGH A DOOR YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU LEFT OPEN." - JOHN BARRYMORE - SPEAKINGBIPOLAR.COM

I was cleaning out my closet the other day when I came across an old journal. It was filled with memories from my younger years—good and bad.

As I flipped through the pages, I stumbled upon a entry from a vacation I took to Edisto Island, South Carolina. In it, I had written that I had the best day ever.

It was the night of the killer racoons. No, not really killers, but that’s not how she saw them.

We were outside late into the night, watching the sky. There was a lunar eclipse in process, and that was our stated purpose for being out there, though really we were just avoided the 20 people in our condo.

I was on my phone chatting with a friend when we heard the noise. Having seen an alligator beside our condo earlier in the day, we couldn’t help but jump, but there was no reason to be afraid. The two raccoons that stared back at us against the glare of our flashlight were only concerned with finding dinner. They had no interest in us.

Looking back, I wish I hadn’t been on the phone. It was nice to talk to a friend who lived far away, but I wasted precious moments with her—moments that would come to an end much quicker than I realized.

Standing in the dark under the blood moon, the feeling was unmistakable. I was in love. I didn’t tell her, of course, not then. I didn’t want to jeopardize our friendship, but in that moment, I knew. I would never love anyone like I did her.

She is with me every day, but to read the words of that night, it was just the boost I needed to get me through another day. She may be gone, but her love still carries me through every day.

Happiness can come from unexpected places. Make sure you keep your eyes open so you don’t miss it.

Until next time, keep fighting.
