Why are we so afraid of failure? From our first days of school, we’re taught that failing is the worst thing we can do, but failure is essential for growth.

Children learn to walk by repeatedly falling down. Each fall could be viewed as a failure, but the child doesn’t quit. Imagine if a toddler made his first attempt to stand and fell back onto his plush diaper, devastated and unwilling to try again. We’d have billions of adults afraid to walk.

Kids are unstoppable. If they fall once or 100 times, they have an instinctual voice inside, pushing them to keep trying. The first steps may be wobbly and chaotic, but before long, they learn their stride, and then it’s a race to keep up with them.

The fear of failure as adults often keeps you stuck where you are right now.

Dealing with mental illness increases the desire to shut down after a failure. Each fall hurts, and the added weight of depression holds you down, but you shouldn’t quit.

Just like a child learning to walk, you’ll never know what you can do until you try. Try new treatment options or explore healthier meal choices.

If what you’re doing now isn’t working, try something else. Fight until you learn to walk. Then, learn another skill. In time, you may learn to fly.

For today, explore your options. Reach out to a friend for suggestions or find a community online. Like-minded souls can help you see options you’ve never considered.

Sitting on the floor accomplishes nothing, so dare to fail. Get up and see what you can achieve.

Until next time, keep fighting.
